Bird watching in Matsalu National Park

Around Matsalu Bay there are several birdwatching towers. The best of these are the Haeska tower and the Keemu tower. Especially the tower in Haeska offers good opportunities to watch birds during a large part of the year. In spring thousands of swans and geese can be seen from this tower. Another good site to see birds, mainly geese and waders, is the coast near Põgari-Sassi. Here you can see the birds from the main road near the big farmbuildings. At Rannajõe there is a watching platform where you have a good view over the so-called alluvial meadows. This is one of the few places where you can expect to see Elk during dusk and dawn. Sometimes more than 10 animals can be seen from the platform.

Bird-watching in Western Latvia (Kurzeme)

Latvia is wonderfully rich in bird fauna, including internationally significant populations of many species. Extensive areas of important wildlife habitats of outstanding importance in a European context are scattered throughout the country.
*Pape*. One of the best birdwatching sites in Latvia during autumn migration. Legendary rarities site. Spring passage of wildfowl and seabirds.
*Cape Kolka*. One of the best birding places in Latvia during spring and autumn migration.
*Liepaja*. Probably the most interesting town in Latvia from a birdwatching point of view. Because of the sea coast, the lake, mild winters and location on bird migration route, interesting bird diversity is provided all year long. The only known place in Latvia with resident Crested Larks.
