Welcome to Winter Wonderland

Welcome!

The New Year has started and we are starting with our blog. Here you can have a look what is going on in Estonia and if you are keeping track you will have a lovely holiday in our wonderful country.

Estonia is a small country (with surface 45000 m²), but it has so much to offer. The medieval capital Tallinn is perfect for  a great city break, in Narva you can still have a hint of Soviet times, the  coast line (about 1200 km) offers lots of lovely sandy beaches and inland has very different landscapes to discover (bogs, rolling hills, virgin forests, lakes and rivers).

We have a colourful history that has shaped our culture. During last 800 years we have been conquered by Danes, Swedes, Germans and Russians. We actually had our first independent Republic of Estonia in years 1918-1940! And now we have our second period of freedom since 1991 (after the collapse of Soviet Union). All the conquerors have left us something from their culture, but remarkably we have saved ours too.

Estonians love to preserve things. We have saved our culture and language. We have still hundreds of years old villages and farm houses in country side. We haven’t destroyed the German and Russian landlord’s manor houses and are more and more restoring those that were forgotten in Soviet times. We have a fairytale Old Town in Tallinn that has oldest house dated back from year 1230 and is listed on UNESCO World Heritage list (read more from UNESCO site http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/822 ). We have still preserved many dialects and some of them are so different from everyday Estonian that most of us don’t understand what they are saying.

You can be surprised that one week is not enough to see it all!

Today we have lovely winter weather with -8 ºC.
