Tallinn smells!

Voi että, miten ihana tuoksu! (“Wow, what a nice smell here” in Finnish) My ear caught the statement of a random tourist while walking my daily route from office to home.  The statement  was  obviously not inspired by my new perfume but the many beautiful flowers sold on  the busiest  street of Tallinn Old Town. These flower stalls here could easily be a symbol of Tallinn, being  always open no matter what time of day or year.

Isn’t the sense of smell a powerful tool to create and keep memories? Thinking of various destinations visited in the past, you may recall also the odours you experienced… Mhmm, some were maybe not so fragrant though.  Focusing on Tallinn, lets walk few meters  through the  gates of the medieval town wall into Old Town...ouch there  should be a warning sign “Don’t enter with a empty stomach”. The best steak house of the town is located just here and the  tempting smell of their Chateaubriand is entering to my nostrils... On the other end of the street is a famous medieval restaurant, you can recognise it from the sweet-spicy scent of roasted almonds on offer outside the restaurant.  I buy a cone and stroll to the Town Hall Square known for the longest tradition of the public Christmas tree and the popular Christmas market. Less than two months ago the place was filled with the nice aroma of spruce forest, ginger bread and mulled wine, definitely my favourite of the season. Many narrow streets from the square are leading to the small cosy cafés.  Just follow the smell of bakery and coffee, and you may find soon your new favourite spot.

However my very favourite smell is the smell of fresh air including the fragrances of wind, sea and forest. And we have a lot of that. Did you know that Tallinn is among the cities enjoying the cleanest air in the world?
